Millions of stolen Twitter logins put on sale

3:08 AM

More than 32 million Twitter login names and passwords are reportedly being offered for sale online.
A hacker using the name Tessa88 is asking for 10 bitcoins (£4,000) from anyone that wants to copy the list.
It is not yet clear whether the list is genuine or how it has been compiled. Some reports suggest it brings together data stolen from users by malware.
In a statement, Twitter said it was "confident" that the data did not emerge from a breach of its network.

Virus victim

Information about the list emerged in a blog entry on the website of a company called Leaked Source, which has built a database of login data that has been stolen or leaked.
It said the dataset shared with it by Tessa88 contained 32,888,300 records - each one of which listed an email address, username and password.
"We have very strong evidence that Twitter was not hacked, rather the consumer was," said the company in its blog.
This has been taken to mean that the list has been compiled using data stolen by a virus that returned it to whoever ran the campaign to infect people.
Analysis of information supplied with the dataset suggested it had been gathered this way, said Leaked Source.
Other information, such as a breakdown of where most victims live, provided further evidence that it had not come from Twitter, it added.
Leaked Source said it had taken steps to verify a small number of the email accounts and passwords in the list were genuine. ZDNet said two staff members found on the list verified that the password listed next to their name was accurate but one other staffer said their details were incorrect.

A breakdown of email addresses in the list revealed that Russian accounts feature prominently. Russian email addresses make up more than 7.4 million of the total number of login credentials in the list.
In a tweet sent soon after it blogged about the data going on sale, Leaked Source said it had been contacted by Twitter's security staff who would now "forcibly" protect users from the data in the list.
Separately, Twitter's security boss Michael Coates confirmed it was working with Leaked Source on using credential data in the list to help users.
He added: "We have investigated reports of Twitter usernames/passwords on the dark web, and we're confident that our systems have not been breached."
In another statement, Twitter said it had been "working to help keep accounts protected by checking our data against what's been shared from recent other password leaks".
Security expert Troy Hunt, who runs a website that lets people check if their login names and accounts are in data breaches shared online, expressed some scepticism about the leak.
"Just because we've seen some serious breaches recently doesn't mean we should assume new ones are legit," he said.
He advised people to change their Twitter password if it was weak or if people had used the same one for other online services.
The sale of the Twitter data comes soon after huge amounts of login data from MySpace and Tumblr were widely shared. Earlier in May, millions of records about LinkedIn credentials were offered for sale online.

Twitter accounts locks after log-ins go on sale

2:58 AM

Twitter has locked some accounts following reports that log-in details for millions of users were on sale.
On Thursday reports surfaced that a Russian hacker called Tessa88 was asking for 10 bitcoins (£4,000) for access to a list of 32 million names.
In a blogpost, Twitter said it was confident that the data had not come from a hack attack on its servers.
But after scrutinising the list, it had locked some accounts and users would need to reset their passwords.
"The purported Twitter @names and passwords may have been amassed from combining information from other recent breaches, malware on victim machines that are stealing passwords for all sites, or a combination of both," wrote Michael Coates, chief security officer at Twitter, in the blogpost.
Security firm Leaked Source, which first shared information about the list, said its analysis suggested the information came from PCs infected with data-stealing malware.

'Sceptical'

Twitter's cross-checking of the list showed that some of the log-in data being offered was real, said Mr Coates, and led to the micro-blogging service locking those accounts and forcing a password reset.
He said Twitter had taken similar action in recent weeks as data from other breaches became publicly available.
He did not say how many of the supposedly stolen log-ins were legitimate or how many accounts had been locked.
Some security experts have expressed doubt about whether all the information in the list of 32 million log-in names is genuine.
Per Thorsheim, who advises companies about security and safe log-in procedures, said he was "sceptical" about the data but added that he had not had chance to look through it himself.
"A 32 million leak doesn't make sense," he said. "It could be a very old leak from when Twitter only had 32 million users, it could be a chunk of the full dataset from a recent breach or what I usually think - it's just made-up junk."
Troy Hunt, who maintains an online repository of breach data, told technology news site Ars Technica that he too had his doubts about the list.
"I'm highly sceptical that there's a trove of 32 million accounts with legitimate credentials for Twitter," he said. "The likelihood of that many records being obtained independently of a data breach and them being usable against active Twitter accounts is extremely low."
The sale of the Twitter list comes in the wake of a series of "mega-breaches" which have seen data stolen from companies many years ago now being widely shared. More than 600 million passwords feature in the massive data dumps.
Cyberthieves are keen to get at this data because many people reuse log-in names and passwords so finding a working combination on one service may unlock many others.

MTN South African mobile phone firm to pay $1.7bn Nigeria fine

2:41 AM
South African mobile-phone giant MTN has agreed to pay $1.7bn (£1.1bn) to Nigeria over failing to disconnect unregistered Sim cards.
The firm was originally fined a record $5.2bn by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) but the two sides have settled on a lower amount.
"This is the best outcome for the company," MTN executive chairman Phuthuma Nhleko said.
The fine was imposed amid fears that militants were using the phone lines.

The NCC confirmed in a statement that payments would be made by instalments over the next three years.

Rumored on AppleTo Consider iPhone Refreshes Every 3 Years

4:41 AM

For the longest time ever, every iPhone that Apple released was more or less a guaranteed hit, with each version outselling its predecessor by a huge margin. This is at least until this year where for the first time ever, Apple experienced a decline in iPhone sales. Of course the company still sold millions of devices, but it did seem to indicate the future of iPhone sales.

So much so that according to a report from Nikkei (via Mac World), the Cupertino company is said to be considering moving the iPhone refresh cycle to once every 3 years. Apparently this is due to the lack of major advances in smartphone hardware, and that the reason to upgrade every year becomes less.
This makes sense as every year what we’re seeing is essentially phones getting faster with support for more RAM, better power efficiency, better cameras, but other than that nothing particularly major has come up. In fact this year’s iPhone seems to be rather lackluster in its rumored specs, with its most exciting feature probably being a possible dual lens setup.
Next year’s iPhone is already being more look-forwarded to as it is said to sport a brand new all-glass design, and edgeless display, the removal of the home button, and also the move to OLED screens. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but with 2016 and 2017’s iPhones already rumored, this 3 year refresh cycle doesn’t look like it will be kicking off anytime soon.

Play Store Now Suggest Unused Apps To Uninstall For More Space

4:18 AM

We never seem to have enough storage on our phones, and if it’s one that doesn’t support microSD cards, then we’re always in the middle of a constant battle to delete stuff or move content to the cloud just so we can clear up some space. Google is willing to help out in that battle. It has added an uninstall manager in the Google Play Store app for Android, it will suggest unused apps on the device that can be uninstalled to free up space on the handset.

The uninstall manager works in a very simple manager. It looks at apps that have been installed on the device but haven’t been used in quite some time. Most of us have a few of these apps on our phones, apps we once installed and just never cared to uninstall.

It will go through all of those apps and show how much space each app is taking up, so you can see at a glance how much space you will free up by uninstalling those apps.

Then, it’s only a matter of checking the apps that you no longer want on your phone and hitting continue. It will uninstall those applications and free up space on your device, thus ensuring that you don’t have to manually find and uninstall each unused app, making life much easier.

WhatsApp Beta Lets You Quote Messages

4:13 AM
In forums and chat apps like Skype, you can quote messages. This helps if you’re late in replying and it helps to give some context as to what you are replying too. This is more or less a standard feature on forums, and it looks like the feature will be making its way onto WhatsApp soon as sighted in the app’s latest Android beta.

As you can see in the screenshot above, the latest beta of WhatsApp has enabled quotes. Using it seems to be pretty straightforward where you just press and hold on the message you want to quote, press the reply button that shows up, enter the message that you were going to reply with, and you’d be good to go!
It also seems to work with media files like photos and videos where it will show up as a thumbnail preview which we guess helps to keep things neater. However the feature is currently in beta which means that unless you’re participating in the beta, you won’t see it until it is released to the masses.
In the meantime other beta features we’ve heard about and are looking forward to include GIF support, video calling, and voicemail (admittedly not so much since who really uses voicemail these days anyway, right?).

Great Lenovo Unveils Smart Shoe That Tracks Your Fitness

4:09 AM

It seems that Lenovo is not content with just making smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and computers. It looks like the company is now looking towards fitness and health-related products because at Lenovo’s Tech World event, the company took the wraps off a pair of smart fitness-tracking shoes.

As you can see in the photo, the Lenovo smart shoes look like your typical pair of sports shoes, but it will come with a host of features that will put your other shoes to shame. Like we said, these are smart shoes and they will come with health-monitoring sensors, like your steps, calories burned, and wireless charging.
It also comes with lights at the bottom and features a 3D printed insole which in theory would allow the shoes to fit you much better. To top things off, these shoes can also be used as a gaming controller, which we can only imagine might be great (and tiring) for endless runners, or maybe some kind of Dance Dance Revolution style game.
That being said, these shoes are currently a prototype and exist more as a proof-of-concept rather than an actual product, but if anything it does hint at the direction companies are looking at in terms of wearables.

Android Marshmallow Memory Leak To Be Fixed In A Future Release

4:06 AM

It was only in the iPhone 6s that Apple finally made the move to include more RAM, bringing it up to 2GB. However this pales in comparison to Android phones in which 3-4GB seems to be the standard, plus there are rumors that this could soon be going up to as much as 6GB, but then again what’s the point of so much RAM if it isn’t being utilized properly, right?

For some Android users, they have noticed that there is a memory leak in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the good news is that it looks like Google has acknowledged the issue and that they are planning on addressing it in a future release, at least according to the Android Issue Tracker which has marked the problem for a “Future Release”.
According to the original post, “It seems the memory leak that plagues us since Lollipop isn’t totally solved. I’ve been keeping my device ON for almost 28 days now, only to find out that ‘System’ will continue to eat through your RAM non-stop, again. Right after boot, it’s at 300-400mb, and now I’m at almost 1 GB of usage, and it never decreases.”
Now we’re not sure what “Future Release” means as it could mean several things. One of which could be that we might see a fix in an upcoming patch, or it could be that we will only see it fixed with the release of Android N, but either way we guess we can take comfort knowing that a fix is coming, eventually.

Google Cofounder Funds Flying Car Companies

4:04 AM

Google may be doing great work on self-driving cars but one of the company’s founders is looking beyond cars on the road, he appears to be interested in cars in the sky. Reports reveal that Google co-founder Larry Page has been pouring some serious money into two startups based in California that are seriously working on flying cars. The startups are known but Page’s involvement in the project has only been made public now, even though he hasn’t confirmed if the reports are true or false.
Bloomberg has published a report claiming that Larry Page has been spending money on Kitty Hawk and Zee.Aero, the two startups that are serious about making flying cars.
Multiple sources claim that Zee.Aero has actually developed a couple of prototypes which it’s regularly testing at a facility near a runway in Hollister in southern California. These prototypes are said to be plane-like cars with propellers in the back, one prototype is apparently for one person at a time while the other is capable of carrying multiple passengers.
There’s a possibility that Page might no longer remain a patron of both startups because Bloomberg itself says that Page’s involvement with these startups hinges on anonymity and that he’s said that if his connection becomes public he will immediately withdraw his support. Whether or not this will actually happen remains to be seen, but it’s unlikely if the result will ever be made public.

Google is Introducing ‘Nearby’ Notifications For Android

4:01 AM

Thanks to iBeacons, iOS devices have a unique feature in which if it detects you’re near somewhere that might have a related app, it will show up on your lockscreen. A good example would be Starbucks where if you are in proximity, the Starbucks app icon will show up on your lockscreen where you can launch it and use it to pay for your drinks.

Now it looks like Google will be bringing a similar feature to Android called “Nearby”. However from what we can tell, Google’s version will work regardless of whether you have the app or not. One of the examples they gave (see screenshot above) was how if you’re at the airport, you could be prompted to download the United Airlines app.

According to Google, “The right app at the right moment lets you get more done. For example, at a store, you may want a barcode scanner to check prices and reviews for an item. Or when you’re at a museum, an audio tour would enhance the experience as you make your way around the exhibits. But, getting the right apps at the right time can be tough if you don’t already know about them. So, we’re introducing a new Android feature called Nearby, which notifies you of of things that can be helpful near you.”
This feature isn’t limited to just apps as it will work with Google Cast and Android Wear where you can pair devices easily when the notification pops up. Users will need to enable Bluetooth and Location and also will need at least Android 4.4 KitKat and above for it to work. The feature is being rolled out as we speak as part of the Google Play Services release.

Bluetooth 5 with much faster speeds and wider range

3:38 AM

Bluetooth 5, the predictably named next major iteration of one of the most popular wireless standards, is expected to be formally unveiled next week. The new incarnation of Bluetooth is expected to offer a significant improvement over the current version, with double the range and four times the speed of low energy Bluetooth transmissions.

News of the upcoming announcement comes from executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) Mark Powell who revealed in a newsletter earlier this week that next incarnation of the technology will be announced at the Discover Blue press event in London on June 16:

Bluetooth 5 will further propel the adoption and deployment of beacons and location-based services to users around the world. It’s a great story and one we’re looking forward to telling from our upcoming media event in London on 16 June.

Bluetooth 5 is also promised to make Bluetooth beacons more useful. These are basically devices – still not very popular right now – which broadcast signals that can be picked up by smart devices nearby. The technology could be employed at different venues – at retail stores, stadiums, galleries, museums, and many more – to automatically send small pieces of data, containing whatever type of information, to smart devices nearby.

As for the name of the new versionyou might have noticed that SIG has decided to drop the reference to both the version (e.g. v4.0, v4.1) and the point number in its marketing messaging. This has been done for the sake of simplification, Mr. Powell says.

unlimited Google Photos storage for two years With Moto Z Droid Edition Users

3:35 AM

So now we know what this year's Motorola Droid models will look like at Verizon this year. There will be a high-end model that will be the flagship for the line, the Motorola Moto Z Force Droid Edition. And there is the Motorola Moto Z Droid Edition. In some regards, you could consider the former to be this year's version of the Droid Turbo with a shatterproof screen and a 3500mAh battery that provides up to 40-hours of  battery life.

The Motorola Moto Z Droid Edition might not have exactly the same specs found on the Moto Z Force Droid Edition, but it will be powered by the Snapdragon 820 chipset, carry 4GB of RAM, and work with the Moto Mods accessories. The 5.5-inch AMOLED screen might not be shatterproof, but it does have a 1440 x 2560 resolution, and is protected by Gorilla Glass. Obviously, this handset is nothing to sneeze at.

And lost amid the excitement of yesterday's presentation (wasn't that Jobs' star Ashton Kutcher proving that he really does work for Lenovo?) was the news that Moto Z Droid Edition users will receive two-years of unlimited cloud based storage in original quality via Google Photos. Last month, it was rumored that Nexus users would be given unlimited Google Photo storage at original quality for photos and videos (4K videos included). This would be offered as a way to boost sales of Nexus phones and tablets.

Unlike the deal rumored to be offered to Nexus users, Moto Z Droid Edition users do have a two-year limit. Those two-years will go by so quickly that those who take Google up on the free, unlimited storage offer shouldn't wait too long to consider their exit strategy for when their two-years is up.

Amazon with its own streaming music service Could Be Taking on Apple Music and Spotify

3:26 AM

According to a report published on Friday, Amazon is about to challenge music streamers Spotify and Apple Music with a service that will be priced competitively, and offer a similarly diverse music catalog for users to choose from. Apple Music gives new subscribers a one time three-month free trial. After that, the service costs $9.99 a month for individuals ($4.99 a month for students) and $14.99 for a family with up to six members.

Spotify also charges $9.99 a month for its premium service. But roughly 70% of its subscribers use the ad supported free tier, which is a level of service that Apple does not offer. Spotify, at last count, has over 100 million free and paying subscribers which makes it the top music streamer globally. David Pakman, a partner at Venture Capital firm Venrock, says that he would expect a streaming music service from Amazon to take customers away from Apple, but not Spotify.

Speculation about Amazon's new streaming music service calls for it to charge $9.99 a month. Currently, members of its Prime shipping and video service are entitled to listen to a free music streaming service called Prime Music, which has a limited catalog of one million tunes. Apple and Spotify's music libraries are estimated to contain 30 million songs each. Current Prime Music members are able to listen to streaming music via the Amazon Music with Prime Music app available in the App Store.

Amazon's new music streaming service is expected to launch in late summer or early fall, with the company presently in negotiations with record labels.

LG G4 and LG G3 go on sale: very low price

5:49 PM

The LG G4 was one of the best phones of 2015 for a good reason: the 5.5" phone dealt with some major issues from its predecessors.

Now, the LG G4 has gone on sale for an extremely affordable price. You can get the LG G4 for just $210 on a limited-time deal on Woot.com, less than half its original price, and this is the best deal we've seen for the phone so far.

The Snapdragon 808-equipped LG G4 fixed a lot of the stuttery performance issues from the G3, as well as the nasty oversharpening effect on the screen. In addition to that, it offered a different, genuine leather back that - unlike the cold metal used by most - provides a nice warm touch and made the phone stand out. The G4 also introduced a new camera that turned out great, capturing stunning images in various conditions and capable of recording 4K video.

Still, the LG G3 is also not a bad device. It was the first mass-market phone with a Quad HD Display and also featured a well-performing camera.

What's even better is that the LG G3 price has dropped to the super affordable $130.

Both the LG G4 and LG G3 at those prices are refurbished units. You can get them at the link right below.

toughest, most durable Lightning cables for your iPhone or iPad

5:37 PM

Let us guess – you've landed on this page because your iPhone's Lightning cable is tearing apart. If that's the case, you're not alone in your suffering. The original Apple Lightning cable isn't very durable, and many an Apple device owner are aware of that. Head over to the Apple Store and read the comments to see what we mean.

The accessory's weak spot has nothing to do with the Lightning connector itself. The reversible nature of the plug makes it convenient to use, and the lack of moving parts means that it will last through a great number of insertion cycles. However, the insulation the cable is wrapped in is prone to splitting and fraying, especially if you don't treat it with care. Cables don't like being run over by office chairs, you know.
One way of dealing with the mediocre durability of the original Lightning cable is to wrap weak areas in sticky tape as soon as signs of wear become apparent. The other is to buy a better, more durable cable. Speaking of which, we scouted the web in search of the toughest, most durable Lightning cables for the iPhone and iPad. The ones we came across may not be cheap, but they will surely outlast the cable your iPhone came with. They will probably survive longer than the iPhone itself. Check them out!
